Summer 2015

Prof. Loren Haarsma talks with members of the Los Alamos Faith and Science Forum following his evening lecture in August 2015

The Los Alamos Faith and Science Forum conducted our second summer discussion series in 2015. We used the book Origins: Christian Perspectives on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design, by Deborah Haarsma and Loren Haarsma as a starting point for our discussions – the origin of the universe, of life, and of humanity. Members of the forum led the discussions each week in June and July. On August 4-6, the Haarsmas visited and gave three keynote lectures, and had a chance to meet with members of the community. Our hope was that these lectures and discussions were interesting and accessible to all members of the community interested in faith and science, no matter what religion or scientific background. Talks were aimed at a general audience.

The summer series began on June 3 and continued every Wednesday through the end of July at Kelly Hall at Trinity on the Hill. Dinner was provided at 6 pm, with a presentation at 6:30 and discussion at 7pm, ending around 8 pm. Deborah Haarsma and Loren Haarsma visited the first week of August and gave presentations the evenings of August 4 – 6 at Church of Christ at 7pm. All were welcome.

About the book:
When it comes to the history of the universe, many believe that science and faith are mutually exclusive. In the book Origins: Christian Perspectives on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design, physics professors Deborah Haarsma and Loren Haarsma explore what God’s Word AND God’s world teach us about creation, evolution, and intelligent design. Clearly explaining the science, the authors focus on areas where Christians agree. They also present the strengths and weaknesses of areas where Christians differ.
“Origins” helps develop a deeper understanding of the origins of the universe and sort out views on faith and science. More information is available online at www.FaithAliveResources.org/Origins.

About the Haarsmas:

Deborah & Loren Haarsma are professors in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Calvin College. Deborah (Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology) researches galaxies and cosmology; Loren (Ph.D., Harvard University) studies electrical activity of nerve cells. Deborah is also the director of the Biologos Foundation (founded by Francis Collins). Together, they have explored the science and theology of origins, speaking at numerous conferences, colleges, and churches.
